Guide · Generative Design · 3 min read
A road design starts from the survey alignment and ends with a corridor, its structures and its report. Here is how the Generative Design module gets from one to the other.

From the survey alignment
A road is designed along its chainage: the distance along the centre line from the start of the project. The Generative Design module takes the survey alignment and gives the plan, the profile and a 3D corridor.
The corridor
•
Cross-sections by road type. Each road type has its own cross-section, and the Generative Design module applies it along the route.
•
Cut and fill. Earthworks are balanced along the route, so material cut in one stretch can fill another.
•
Structures along the chainage. Culverts and underpasses are placed where the corridor needs them.
The Detailed Project Report
The Generative Design module generates chapters of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) from the same model, so the report follows the design when it changes. On a construction site, DPR often means the daily progress report instead; our glossary explains both.
An example
A Generative Design roads example covers 12.4 km of 6-lane highway. Your alignment and rules set the numbers for your project.
After design
On site, the Construction Management module runs the works stretch by stretch. Zones carry the names the planner uses for chainages and structures.
