Guide · Generative Design · 4 min read
A metro viaduct repeats a few structure types along the whole line. Rule-based generative design places and checks every one of them from your rules, so engineers spend their time on the rules and the exceptions.

What repeats on a viaduct
An elevated metro line is built from a short list of parts: piles, pile caps, piers, pier caps, bearings, girders and parapets, with the track and the overhead equipment (OHE) on top. Each pier is a variation on a few standard types. The ground, the height and the span change along the route.
Designing pier by pier by hand means drawing the same structure many times with small changes, then checking each one. That work is slow and easy to get wrong after a late change.
From the alignment to every pier
Generative design turns the repeated work into rules. You bring:
•
the design standards, such as IRS, IRC or AASHTO
•
your component types and their limits
•
the loads
•
the alignment and levels, from Excel, PDF or CAD
The Generative Design module places every part along the route and sizes it to your rules. It checks the load combinations for every pier, and flags the piers that need an engineer's attention.
Analysis without the redraw
The Generative Design module sends the model to finite element and structural analysis tools through built-in integrations, and the results come back into Generative Design automatically. When an engineer changes a pier, the parts that depend on it are rebuilt and the next round runs on the updated model. Read more in analysis rounds without the redraw.
Drawings and the BOQ
General arrangements, sections and a priced BOQ come from the same model, so they change when the design changes. Files export as IFC, DWG, DXF, PDF and XLSX for your common data environment and CAD tools.
Where engineers stay in charge
Engineers write and review the rules, review the analysis and approve the design. SAM, the AI assistant in Generative Design, takes changes in plain language, such as "change pier P3 diameter to 1.8 m". Every part that depends on that pier is rebuilt.
After design
On site, the Construction Management module runs the viaduct pier by pier. Zones carry the names the planner uses, such as Pier P3 and Span P1–P2. Both modules use the same terms for structures and BOQ lines, and each works on its own.
