HOME / RESOURCES / DATA CENTRE DESIGN FROM A CAPACITY TARGET
Guide · Generative Design · 3 min read
A data centre layout starts from one number: the capacity it must deliver. Generative design lays out the halls, power and cooling from that target and prices each option, so a team can compare layouts before anyone draws one by hand.

Start from the capacity
Pick the site and set the capacity. The Generative Design module lays out the data halls, power rooms, cooling plant and service runs, floor by floor, to meet that target.
Because the layout comes from rules, a team can change the target or the site and get a new layout without starting the drawings again.
Rules applied together
A data centre has to satisfy several sets of rules at once. The Generative Design module applies the planning, mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) and access rules together. It coordinates five trades in one model, so clashes between them show up in the layout, before anything is built.
It also runs thermal checks on the hot and cold aisles.
A price for every option
The Generative Design module prices each layout option, with equipment schedules and a live BOQ that follow the model. A team can compare options on cost before choosing one to develop.
An example
A Generative Design data-centre example has 95 racks at 2.8 MW with N+1 redundancy and no clashes in the model. Your rules and site set the numbers for your project.
After design
On site, the Construction Management module runs the build level by level. Zones carry the names the planner uses, such as Level 4 west or Data hall 2, and daily progress, inspections and the BOQ follow them.
